Solar UV, stratospheric ozone and UVB

چکیده
The variations of stratospheric ozone and UVB observed at ground were compared with those solar indices. During sequences 27-day oscillations, X-ray had very large amplitudes (exceeding 50%), EUV near 30 nm ~20%, Lyman alpha 121.6 ~10%, Mg II 280 ~5%, continua 180-210 ~2%, 210-240 ~1.5%, 240-300 ~1%, 300-350 ~0.5%. There distinct peaks seen in all these, spacing roughly about 27 days. For effects on ozone, the relevant wavelengths are mostly continua. In sequences, Dobson Arosa (47° N, 10° E) showed fluctuations (~50%) many peaks, but did not match one such sequence, TOMS overpass over Kagoshima, Japan (32° 121° (295-325 nm) Kagoshima day-to-day fluctuations, ~20% for ~50% or UVB, each other, nor indices, thus indicating altogether different mechanisms as their causes. long-term changes largest seasonal variation (~40% range, peak to trough) next QBO (Quasi-biennial oscillation, ~7%, trough). Solar cycle ranges (peak only ~2.6% 19 (sunspot maximum number 210), ~3.5% 20 111) uncertain thereafter, because global depletion which started 1980. 1991-1997, monthly values Thessaloniki, Greece (40° 23° anti-correlated 305 (1% decrease corresponded ~2% increase), poorly correlated 325 that ozone-UVB relationship was highly wavelength-dependent. However, whereas indices a 1991 minimum 1996, neither any two resemblance index variations. particular, level high decreased considerably within years (by 1993). A comparison N) Syowa (69° S) this drop is related due ozone.

Stratospheric solar geoengineering without ozone loss.
Injecting sulfate aerosol into the stratosphere, the most frequently analyzed proposal for solar geoengineering, may reduce some climate risks, but it would also entail new risks, including ozone loss and heating of the lower tropical stratosphere, which, in turn, would increase water vapor concentration causing additional ozone loss and surface warming. We propose a method for stratospheric ae...
متن کاملSolar proton event: influence on stratospheric ozone.
Large-scale reductions in the ozone content of the middle and upper stratosphere over the polar cap regions were associated with the major solar proton event of 4 August 1972. This reduction, which was determined from measurements with the backscattered ultraviolet experiment on the Nimbus 4 satellite, is interpreted as being due to the catalytic destruction of ozone by odd-nitrogen compounds (...
متن کاملStratospheric ozone and health.
BACKGROUND Stratospheric ozone is being depleted and ambient ultraviolet (UV) irradiance is probably increasing. While remedial steps have been taken through the Montreal protocols, at best it will take some 90 years for stratospheric ozone concentrations to return to the levels existing in the 1970s. METHODS The evidence that these changes may have harmful effects on health has been reviewed...
متن کاملGlobal monitoring of atmospheric ozone and solar UV radiation
The global monitoring network of ground-based ozone measurements consists mainly of Dobson and Brewer spectrophotometers. These instruments provide total ozone column amounts derived from measurements of direct solar UV radiation. Analysis of total ozone measurements from the global monitoring network shows a nearly linear downward trend from 1980 to mid 1990s. Data after mid 1990s indicate tha...
متن کاملStratospheric variability and tropospheric ozone
[1] Changes in the stratosphere-troposphere exchange (STE) of ozone over the last few decades have altered the tropospheric ozone abundance and are likely to continue doing so in the coming century as climate changes. Combining an updated linearized stratospheric ozone chemistry (Linoz v2) with parameterized polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) chemistry, a 5-year (2001–2005) sequence of the Europ...
